Residential Landscape Design

Native Roots has had the opportunity to work on some amazing residential home designs that reduce the amount of turf and increase the biodiversity by incorporating native plants. If properly designed and cared for in the early years, native landscapes can become low maintenance while supporting a high diversity of pollinators and other visitors to the landscape.

Green Infrastructure Maintenance

Urban environments receive high pressure after large storm events due to the amount of impervious surface present. Green Infrastructure can greatly reduce this pressure by collecting stormwater and slowly releasing it back into the system after peak flows. In order for these systems to be successful the proper maintenance needs to occur during the first years after installation.

Native plants have deep roots giving them the ability to absorb large amounts of water. These roots filter out pollutants and allow water to infiltrate into the soil, reducing surface runoff which can cause erosion and sediment loads to be deposited into streams and rivers.

Land Management

It is important to incorporate native plants into our formal home landscapes, but it is equally important to keep our existing natural areas free of invasive plants and promote diversity of both flora and fauna. Non-native species can quickly alter the environmental conditions, such as sunlight, soil moisture and plant composition. They reduce the diversity of a site by establishing large stands of monocultures which choke out native species. Early detection of these exotic species will result in faster eradication with less effort.

Vegetation surveys help guide the management plan by identifying areas of concern that should be targeted first. After invasive species have been initially removed, it can take multiple years to reestablish the once dominant native vegetation. Continued maintenance to monitor and eradicate exotic species will promote native diversity.
